Intermediates lose out to Saffrons

Antrim 4-16

Wexford 2-11

Wexford Intermediates didn’t seem to show many ill effects from the long journey to Glenravel in Antrim and got off to a great start with Joanne Dillon opening the scoring with a point, before the lively Oonagh Doyle doubled the lead moments later from a placed ball.  A failure to clear the danger at the back for Wexford saw Antrim claim a scrappy goal on ten minutes from Caitrin Dobbin, but Oonagh Doyle levelled matters three minutes later from a 45m free. Antrim’s Raquel McCarry sent a rare camogie side-line cut over the bar to see the home side forge the lead for the first time which they quickly added a point from play to see them go three points clear.  Oulart’s Aideen Brennan grabbed the goal that Wexford needed to get back into the game and level the contest, however Antrim responded moments later with Dobbin grabbing a second goal before stretching the lead out with a pointed free and added two more in quick succession to see them lead 2-6 to 1-3. Mags Byrne and Dee McMahon got on the score sheet for Wexford with a point a piece from play within a minute of each other to bring Wexford right back into the match before the half time whistle sounded. Antrim 2-6, Wexford 1-5.

On the restart it was Rathnure’s Oonagh Doyle who pointed to leave just a goal between the sides, but Antrim got four points on the bounce to put seven between the sides. Mag Byrne stopped the rot on the 40 minute mark with a point from play for Wexford, but Antrim yielded a further 2-2 without reply through the in form McCarry in a two minute period to leave the Wexford side with a mountain to climb. Mags Bryne with 2 points in as many minutes showed her class and Antrim packed out their goal to deny Wexford a major from a close in free moments later. Joanne Dillon was on hand to finish to the net and lift the Wexford spirits heading into the closing minutes of the match.  Aideen Brennan traded two points with Antrim’s McCarry and Wexford finished on the wrong side of a 4-16 to 2-11 scoreline.  Laois will visit this Saturday and Wexford will look to this match to register their first win of the championship.
